Paul has released many albums with many different bands, this page contains all of his releases, except for what he's done with Iron Maiden, that is well documented on their page.
Following the demise of Paul Di'Anno's first post Maiden outfit Di'Anno, matters were ultimately bound to become more metal. While Di'Anno was a fine band, as their 1984 album for FM Revolver and a series of great live shows could testify, it was obviously the heavier end of his music that the fans wanted from the man rather then the more L.A. based style of his then current act. Heavy was what they got with the formation of Battlezone, which proved to be a natural progression from the classic NWOBHM sound that Iron Maiden helped perfect, more melodic but no less explosive.
Paul had initally formed the band Strike while still in America, with drummer Bob Falck and guitarist John Hurley already on board. With his return to the UK though, the name changed to Paul Di'Anno's Battlezone, but eventually changed to just Battlezone as Paul didn't want it to be his solo project. The first line-up of the band to actually stabilize was Di'Anno, Hurley, bassist Laurence Kessler and drummer Adam Parsons. Parsons was soon to leave for glammier areas with London based band Belladonna however, and then a successful career as a booking agent and tour manager. So it was Falck, along with new bassist Pete West and ex-Tokyo Blade guitarist John Wiggins, who returned to drum on the band's excellent debut album Fighting Back, recorded for Raw Power in 1986. An ambitious release, it was obvious to all that Paul and Battlezone had something to prove. With tracks like the atmospheric and pounding "Welcome To The Battlezone" and the epic "The Land God Gave To Cain", they undoubtedly succeeded.
During the band's debut US club tour, musical differences began to surface, resulting in the departure of both Hurley and Falck (with Falck joining Overkill after his departure). Replacements came in the form of ex-Persian Risk members guitarist Graham Bath and drummer Steve Hopgood. With John Wiggins and Pete West still on board it was this line-up that would record the band's second album "Children Of Madness" for Powerstation in 1987. Featuring the thunderous title track, the frantic "Rip It Up", the brooding "Whispered Rage" and the atmospheric "I Don't Wanna Know" (which their was a video made for), this was a much improved and more mature Battlezone in every department. As Di'Anno himself was often heard to say..."The future's bright, thefuture's Battlezone!". And so it seemed...
However it was a long time before Battlezone (in any form at all) would resurface. About ten years, in fact. Following two albums with Killers ("Murder One in 1992, and "Menace To Society" in 1994), a new line-up of Battlezone was back to dish out their brutal wares once again. Taking guitarist Nick Burr and bassist Gavin Cooper from Killers along with his old cohort guitarist John Wiggins and new drummer Paulie Tsarion, Di'Anno set about the task of recording demo's for a new album (those tracks appear on the "Cessation Of Hostilites" compilation).
When the album was finally finished in the spring of 1998, the line-up had once again changed, with only Di'Anno and John Wiggins remaining. While Burr, Tsarion and Cooper were replaced by guitarist Paulo Turin, and the ex-Tokyo Blade rhythm section of drummer Mark Angel, and bassist Colin Riggs. The resulting album "Feel My Pain" released on Zoom Club, was a skull crushing metal affair, along the lines of the Sepultura influenced style of metal. Di'Anno's voice was in fine form there, and the record had a compositionally pleasing heavy sound. Gigs in Brazil and Europe followed, but the album's sales potential was undoubtedly harmed by Battlezone's inability to play the USA due to Di'Anno's visa problems.
Whether this will prove to be the last we hear of Battlezone is anyone's guess. With the band once again disbanded, Di'Anno has released a few solo albums with a self-titled band, and continues to tour with different line-ups. One can only hope Battlezone will return.
